Summer at Forsaken Lake

Happy Leap Day!  What a fun extra day today!  We went grocery shopping in town, and then tackled History, Art, Math, Reading, and Writing for the kids.  Chickadee #1 is learning about Early America and the colonies.  Chickadee #2 is learning about the Elizabethan era.  #3, and #4 are learning about Ancient Greece.

I saw an inspiring Green Bay Packer's Quote today, and had to share.  I truly believe we could have won every game this year... but we ran out of time!  :).

We also took a walk down by the river today, and enjoyed throwing rocks in, underneath our bridge.

My outfit today is inspired by the nautical theme that is so popular this spring and summer.  I wanted to build an outfit around my vintage blue pleated skirt.  I devided my polka dotted blouse would go well with it - and belted it in red.  I kept with the red in my shoes too, as blue shoes would have been too much, I think!   I also added my cool vintage anchor brooch - since my blouse had a tie neck, and I couldn't do a necklace.

The book choice for today is:  Summer at Forsaken Lake.  A story about a boy named Nicholas, who finds his father's old stash of film - from back when he was young and making a movie at the lake.  Nicholas uncovers secrets long buried.  What really happened that summer on the lake so long ago?  4*.  I would also like to point out - this author also wrote The Red Blazer books and a fabulous book about a cat named Lantern Sam.  Check him out!  He just might become a new favorite author!

Well,  that was my wonderful leap day.  How was yours?

Trapped in the Slickrock Canyon

Trapped in Slickrock Canyon takes place near the Grand Canyon.  I think of Southwestern colors and patterns when I think of this area - thus my outfit today.

Today was a great day!  I had my chickadees with me and we went to eat lunch at McDonald's, and - even better - had ice cream for dessert.  :). We came home and rode our bikes all over our field - up and down the jumps.  It was a lot of fun.

My skirt today came from my friend's boutique shop - which she closed earlier this year!  It is a limish / lemonish yellow with bright pink to really pop.  The pattern really reminded me of the Southwest.  I went with a dark emerald green turtleneck - and my cable car necklace.  My necklace is an old key chain that I upcycled to make into a necklace.

Trapped in the Slickrock Canyon is the book I based this outfit on.  It is an older book written in 1984.  If you've never read it - I think it's worth finding a copy.  It is about a girl named Gina from the city and a boy named Justin from the country.  They are cousins, and Justin is in charge of taking care of Gina.   He is mad about it, and decides to take her into Slickrock Canyon.  All sorts of wild adventures commence.  From bad guys with guns to flash floods.  This book is quite an adventure!   4*!

Chasing Redbird

A cardinal.  Bright red.  A spark of color in a winter world.  Guess what?  I've never seen one!  Cardinals don't live in my neck of the woods.  But we have red-breasted robins.  Soon the robins will be back in our area.  Robins are a sign of spring.  But for now, a shirt full of colorful birds will have to do.

Today, we went to our Sunday meeting.  Great reminders to keep our words gracious and kind!  Afterwards, we went to Millstone Pizza and had lunch.  Sports and Pizza - what could be better?  We came home and watched ice-skating / went biking / and went for a walk.  It was a fun day.

The inspiration for this outfit is Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech.  It is a wonderful book about a girl named Zinny, who discovers an old forgotten trail in the woods behind her house.  She decides to clear it away and make it a path again.  What will she find out about her and her family's past?  I would give this book 4 stars.  Go read it today!

The House of the Scorpion / The Lord of Opium

What an exciting day today!  For my outfit post I went with one of my favorite series of books by Nancy Farmer:  The House of the Scorpion and The Lord of Opium.

The Lord of Opium has a poppy on the cover - which just so happens to go along with the poppys on my skirt.

It just so happens that for February it has been unseasonably warm.  We're talkin'  50's and 60's warm... not only is that odd for our neck of the woods, but what makes it even more strange is the fact that the rest of our state - and even the rest of the nation - has been experiencing blizzards of 2-3 feet and plummeting temperatures.  Hmmm.  Very strange.  Very, very strange....

All this warm weather has made it feel like spring is in the air.  And I must confess, that air has kept us busy with riding bikes, and trampolines, and no time for blogging!

Thinking of spring, I decided I had to wear my poppy skirt.  We also live in an agriculture town, and so fields of food and plenty abound around our old homestead house.   Right now, of course, they lay dormant, but I thought what better place than a field to show off a skirt that shows plant life?  Dreams of poppy fields filled my head.  I added a white button down blouse, and heels in orange.  I also put on my multi color beaded necklace and my orange and blue stretch bracelets.

After my fun field photo shoot, my hubby decided to take us down to the river and teach us how to pan for gold.  While it was a lot of fun, it wasn't very successful, although I did find a minuscule, (like you need a magnifying glass) speck of gold on my first pan!  So, that was rather exciting.

My books for this post are:  The House of the Scorpion.  A story of a boy - who's father is the ruler of The Land of Opium - who discovers he is his father's clone.  Then, his father unexpectedly dies, leaving him running for his life.  The first book talks about how he escapes this life, makes friends, and becomes a strong individual in his own right.

Fast forward 15 years.  Finally, a second book!  This new book :  The Lord of Opium stands on it's own two feet.  He has to now go back to Opium and become the Lord of Opium.  But will he make the same mistakes as his father?  Or will he become a new kind of ruler?  And who can he really trust?

Two of my favorite books of all time.  I highly recommend them!   5 stars!*****

My Football Life: How It Began... Getting to Know Me Monday

I come from a football loving family; although, it took me a little bit longer to embrace the game.  My dad was a Bears fan (his dad was a Bears fan), and a Denver Broncos fan (they were the "close" team).  My mom loved the Philadelphia Eagles (her high school was the Eagles), and the Oakland Raiders (she was in love with Kenny Stabler.).  I ended up watching because they watched.  I even have bits of memory of games from the past.  I remember going for the Bills in four straight Super Bowls.  I remember watching a player on the Giants break away from the o-line and score a TD by doing a front flip into the end zone.  I remember going for the Broncos with my dad.  I remember the Broncos choking in every Super Bowl they played in.  I remember Chicago choking in the Super Bowl.  Most of my memories involve loosing.  Lol.  Why?  Because my family loved going for the underdogs!  Down with those Cowboys, 49ers, and Steelers!  They won all the time!  (This has continued into the future for me, by the way.)

Although I watched some football.  Oh. I was so horrible at math and the thought of figuring out WHY that 1st and 10 changed to 1st and 20 or 2nd and 2 or 3rd and 5 was beyond me!  I just didn't get it... yet.  So, I watched basketball and cheered for Houston and Indiana.  But that's another story.

The year I was in 8th grade - I actually sat down and watched football.  I mean, really watched it.  Mostly, I still watched Denver games, but I discovered I didn't really like John Elway, or Bill Romanowski, or really, anyone.  So, I started watching other games.  I started forming my own opinions.  It wasn't until I was watching the AFC championship and the NFC championship in that year that I saw..... Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.  They told his whole story and interviewed him.  The rest in history.  I watched him play that game against Dallas.  They played tough and I thought they had it, and were heading to the Super Bowl.  Then, one of their coaches was knocked out with a wayward tackle.  It seemed to take the momentum away to Dallas and they eventually won the game.  But, I said then and there that the Packers were winning the Super Bowl the next year.  In the AFC, I was going for the Indianapolis Colts who also lost.  Although it solidified my top 3 teams.  ( I also like the Chiefs - cuz I saw Arrowhead in person... but that's another story. )

The next year, I became a football fanatic.  I watched every game very closely.  And, when the Packers made it to the NFC championship again, I was chanting along with the crowd... we want Dallas!  We want Dallas!  Instead we got the Carolina Panthers, who we creamed to make it to our first Super Bowl appearance in years!

Of course, Pack won!  And my fondest memory is of Brett, giddy as a school boy, running across the field with his helmet off.  The trophy was ours.  The next year, Packers made it to the Super Bowl again, and lost to the Broncos.  Now, you know why I do not like the Broncos.  Those were amazing years!  I loved watching Brett play.  He had such a love of the game and brought such joy to football.  I also enjoyed Robert Brooks, Reggie White, Gilbert Brown, Sterling Sharpe, Greg Jennings, and Antonio Freeman, and so many more!

The Brett Favre controversy?  Don't get me started!  I was a Brett Favre fan 1st and foremost.  I never hated him.  He gave way to the next great QB.  Aaron Rodgers.  After Favre, he had to earn my respect.  And he eventually did.  I like Aaron.  He is a Super Close Second - for my favorite player of all time.  But, he'll never topple Brett, and his pure unadulterated joy.

When GB pulled off a miracle by winning 3 road games and beating the highly favored Steelers in the Super Bowl in 2011- it was an amazing night.  My favorite memory is Aaron jumping for joy.  I will continue to route for the Pack and Aaron to win another Super Bowl!

And that's my (part of it anyways) story of how I became a Packer fan and stayed a Packer fan... Green and Gold till I am Dead and Cold!  Cheesehead for life!  Go Pack Go!

Super Bowl 50 - And An Outfit for the Carolina Panthers

Super Bowl 50 today!  My outfit today was inspired by the Carolina Panthers because that is who I was going for!  (The Broncos beat the Packers in 1997 - and I have never forgiven them.).

I decided to wear my aqua blue tank top with my ruffle on the front.  I wanted to wear my gray "leather" jacket for a tough looking edge.  I added my full black skirt from ModCloth - I wore my flats in Aqua to match my shirt.  (Since I was going to be on my feet all day cooking.)  Earrings were my teal dangles.

Super Bowl 50!  I was so hoping for a rematch of SB 1- Green Bay vs. Kansas.  Speaking of - I recorded the first SB ever and can't wait to watch it.  :)

The Super Bowl didn't turn out like I wanted.  But congratulations to all my Denver friends, and congratulations to Peyton Manning.

For my decorations I created a Golden Gate Bridge for San Francisco.  AND we had pom poms to shake for our team we were going for.  :)

Some of my favorite dishes I made this year were Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies.  And BLT Tortilla Rolls.

Till next year!  And Go Packers!

(PS- my highlights of the Super Bowl:  Seeing Aaron Rodgers announced as the Super Bowl MVP from 2010.  AND seeing Brett Favre announcing the opening to the Super Bowl.  My two favorite athletes in football ever!!)

My Secret Guide to Paris...

Blogs are so much fun to read aren't they?  I love seeing what people enjoy doing and what makes them tick.  I have two genres of blogs that I enjoy.  Homeschooling blogs, because I home school and it is awesome to get new ideas.  (Several of them also review books, so win win!). And fashion blogs.

The reason why I bring this up is because one blog I enjoy reading is a fashion blog, and she loves listening to music.  So, her fashion almost takes inspiration from music.  I thought about that, and wanted to come up with something that was at my core that I love doing.  Music, I love, but at the same time, I can go without music.  My books, on the other hand ... that would be like taking a fish out of water and telling it to keep breathing!

I'll bet you didn't know that I am a voracious reader, did you?  I probably have over 1,000 books in my library, and it continues to grow.  Mostly I read to get my mind off the real world.  I love YA books, mysteries, chic lit, the classics.  I don't like reading heavy handed books, nor do I like reading most adult books.  So, I decided to try to come up with different books to inspire my outfits, and see where it leads me!

My Secret Guide to Paris by Lisa Schroeder is a fabulous middle school level book about a girl named Nora who has been planning a trip to Paris with her grandmother, Sylvia.  The trip hits a snag when her grandmother unexpectedly dies.  Nora finds out that Sylvia has actually set up a kind of treasure hunt all over Paris, which leads to some magical out of the way places.  So she decides to go with her mother as a kind of last farewell in rememberence of Grandma Sylvia.

This outfit looked like Paris to me.  A dear couple bought me the dark navy blue top in Europe, so it just seemed fitting for a Paris theme.  Blue and coral work so well together, so I wore a coral scarf around my neck.  (Plus, you just wear scarfs in Paris!). The skirt is a gray pencil skirt - which was a gift.  Another dear friend designed and made my earrings.  I love matching my shoes to a color in my outfit, so I went with my floral coral shoes.

Today was a miserable day where I live - gusts of wind up to 50 mph, and freezing cold outside.   Needless to say, I wasn't able to get outside pictures today.  Sorry these aren't the best, but it is what it is.  :)

What would you wear to Paris?
