A Lazy Afternoon and a Quiet Pond

On a quiet afternoon - we decided to visit a local little pond.  The winds were still.   The sun baked our skin.  The water was quiet.  Dragonflies darted to and fro skimming the water and dive bombing the cat tails.  Bees lazily buzzed a serene song.   It was perfect and peaceful  -  a joyful jaunt from everyday junk.

Even the weeds were beautiful.

What a lovely way to spend the afternoon.  Still. Quiet.  Sunshine.  Waters.  While the kids laughed and splashed and played in the water, I enjoyed a delicious book.

Summer Kids Party 2014 - Camp Out Adventure - Camping Party

Every year I throw a just for fun kids party.  It is in the summer after school has let out.  It lets my kids get together with their friends and just have some fun and let loose.  This year's theme to our party was Camp Out Adventure.

Now I am not one of those people who has the money available that I can just blow hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on kids parties.  No, my parties have to fit into a budget.  So here is my budget camping party.  Enjoy!

We had the party in a city park, which was free.  They have an awesome pavilion available and so we had it underneath it.  The tables were decorated in green plastic table covers.  I bought pine-trees and pine-cones to go with the camping theme.  Campground pictures dotted the area for a rustic feel.

Plates, napkins, table covers, and decorations were all from Oriental Trading Co.  Allowing me to throw a fun party, at a more affordable price.  These items are from their camping adventure theme.

On the food table I had a "make your own trail mix" station.  I used my awesome wooden bowls that we got as a wedding gift way back when... and little plastic baggies.  The goodies we had were almonds, coconut chips, peanuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, pumpkin seeds, and pretzels.

Of course we had to have one treat - and this year it was s'mores in a cup.  Pretty simple really.  This was the easiest recipe I could find.  You make a graham cracker crust using graham crackers, butter, and sugar.  Crush them all together and bake them in the oven to a nice golden glow.  Mix up chocolate pudding.  Buy some marshmallow fluff.  Add in layers:  Graham mix, chocolate pudding, fluff.  Continue to the top.  You can also add mini marshmallows on top, but I thought what we had was enough junk food.

And what is a camping party without fish bait?

Here is our food table in full view.

Games!  The kids and I had so much fun making the camping fishing game.  We cut out felt fish and put them into a plastic tub.  Then for the fishing poles we used burlap string and tied it onto a pencil (really wanted to use real sticks here - but sadly ran out of time.).  At the end of the string we hung a washer and attached velcro to it.  Tada!  Fishing game!

The other games we had were a scavenger hunt game.  I purchased mini insect erasers from Oriental Trading Co.  While the kids were playing on the playground I hid all 144 erasers all over the place.  On the ground, by the grill, in trees, in bushes, etc.  Before the party I had counted how many kids we had and how many of the different types of bugs they could find.  Then I made up little sheets of paper and put pictures of what they needed to find.  2 Butterflies, 1 Dragonfly, 1 Bee, 2 Ladybugs.  Then they went wild!  Even the littlest searchers got into the chase.  It was a lot of fun.

We also played Run, Squirrel, Run!  A really fun game where each player found a tree to touch.  We had two "grabbers."  When I yelled "RUN, SQUIRREL, RUN!"  The squirrels had to run from tree to tree and avoid getting tagged.  When someone got tagged they had to become a "grabber" until only 1 squirrel was left.  That person became the new "grabber."

Another fun game was the Water Brigade.  We had a line of kids and they each were handed tiny little plastic cups.  We had two buckets.  A full bucket of water at one end, and an empty bucket on the other end.  They had to pass the water using the little plastic cups from one end to the other.  The first team to transport all their water won!

Last, I also purchased fun camping sticker sheets for the "campers" to create their very own camping adventure picture.

I also had goody bags for the kiddos.  Inside they found a camping pencil, a compass, and a raccoon picture frame craft to do.  They also got to keep all the erasers they found.

All in all it was a really fun party!  Can't wait to do it all again next year!

Vintage Fashion - Camping

Every year I host a kids party for the kids that we know.  I always come up with a fun theme - and this year's theme was a Camp Out Adventure.  I, of course, have to dress to match the theme.  So, I thought a plaid peach and teal skirt would be just the ticket.  But I wanted to look more "glamping" then just plain old camping so I paired my skirt with a peach top with black lace running the length of the blouse.

As a background I thought some pretty trees on our property would look nice, and I love that our old barns are peaking out from behind the tree - adding even more vintage camping feel to the pictures.

Colors on the Move - Science Experiment -

This is a really neat science experiment for you and your little ones to do. It's easy and it's fun.  We found this experiment here at the American Chemical Society website for kids.

It's called Colors on the Moooove!

Gather your ingredients.  You will need: Milk, dish soap, food coloring, dishes, ear swabs.

Poor the milk into your shallow dish.

Add your food coloring into the milk.

Use your ear swab and get a little bit of dish soap on the end of it.

Dip the ear swab with the end dipped in the dish soap down into the food coloring.

It's magic!

Keep doing it and watch the colors move away from the sides too.

It reminded me of a fun experiment that we did when I was a little kid.  Put water in a shallow dish and add pepper.  Dip a toothpick (or ear swab) into dish soap.  Dip the toothpick into the water.  Voila!  The pepper runs away to the edge of the plate.  We always used to pretend we were performing a magic show.  And it is very fun to give someone else a toothpick with NO dish soap on it and watch them try and duplicate your magic trick.  :)

Have a Hats and Chickadees day!

How Tweet It Is... To finally fit in my clothes!

Finally 3 months after my little sweetie was born I am able to fit into my regular clothing again.  I gained a lot this last pregnancy.  50 pounds.  Yuck and yikes.  I have lost 33 pounds so far, and only 17 more to go.  To celebrate I thought I would actually (gulp!) take the plunge and post an outfit photo of myself on Modcloth and see how it went.  Let's just say at least I didn't get zero votes lol!  Talk about a self-esteem downer.  I'm trying to not let it bother me too much.

I love my outfit regardless.  My hat is handmade and features the color navy blue and a long feather framing my face.  The blouse is long and flowing and I love how the back is longer than the front.  It ties at the neck, a feature I seem to love on my clothing.  Blue and white pinstriped skirt and kitten heel blue shoes along with a cerulean blue belt.

Preschool K12 Program: Embark Comprehensive - Promotion Code

Good morning fellow K12ers and Homeschoolers!  My 4th child is going to turn 3 before the school year starts this fall and my 3rd child will be going into Kindergarten.  So I was very interested in the new K12 Embark preschool program they have come out with.  They have 2 programs available - Embark Online and Embark Comprehensive.  After doing research on it we decided to purchase both programs.  (Eventually K12 wants to offer it for free and put it in the OLS with teachers and everything just like with the other grades- but for now they don't.)

We decided to get the Online version for #3- so that he can work on the activities over the summer to get ready for Kindergarten in the fall.  For #4 we decided to get the Comprehensive version so that for the next 2 years he can work on some of the activities.  We bought everything available so we will not have to re-buy the books or manipulatives for #5.  We will only have to purchase the program again.
